'Far From Here' / Gabriel LCR [Music Video]

Gabriel LCR releases a music video for ‘Far From Here’, the second instalment of his three part music video series.

Created by Almanac Productions, the music video follows in narrative his previous single “Dead Or Alive”, with Gabriel LCR in-between the withering grass of the countryside and a motel inn. For the “city boy [who] ain’t never seen a star” the contrast between the lyrics and imagery is an evocative mechanism to consider more deeply the track’s themes of apprehension surrounding love and relationships.

We spoke to Gabe about the music video, his forthcoming projects and the screening of the vid alongside other films at the Coburg Drive In on May 11th.

You mentioned that ‘Far From Here’ is about the apprehensive feeling you get when you’re on the edge of falling into a relationship. What do you think leads to that apprehension? What led to you deciding to write this song at this moment in time?

I guess I wrote it about times when I have been overthinking shit, I think relationships bring out allot of anxieties and internal questioning which is something I think a lot of people can relate to.

I love the music video and how you’re out in the country - a direct contrast to your lyrics about being a city boy, and about asking someone to take you ‘far away from here’. What was some of the conceptual basis behind the video? Did you work together with the directors to conceptualise the idea?

This clip is a follow up from my last video Dead or Alive and is part 2 of a 3 part series (with the final part dropping next month). Each video including 'Far From Here' is co-directed by Renee Kypriotis and Ari Kwasner Catsi, with Cinematography by Darwin Schulz.

The process of making the videos were very spontaneous. The 4 of us ended up driving out to a motel about 2 hrs south of Sydney, we filmed the 3 videos over the course of a single day.

I only had a small concept of what I wanted the videos to look like, and definitely intended to play with that contrast of the lyrics and visuals. We ended up making something along the lines of a Shannon Noll music video but instead of country rock it's RnB/Hip Hop lmao.

Overall, the creation of the video's was a cool experience because we were just making up the shot sequences and the story line to the songs as we went along, completely beelining the whole thing. l I think it came together really well purely because of the skills and individual talent of Renee, Ari and Darwin

I particularly loved the ending of the music video where we see your dog tattoo, self in the mirror and then yourself with a mask on that mimics the tattoo. Would love to hear more about this symbolism - particularly insofar that it’s also on your cover art. What does that represent to you?

I felt like I needed to have a symbol that people could associate my music with. I think masks are cool and are definitely symbolic in a lot of art and cultures but It’s not really that deep for me right now - I think the symbolism will come in time as my music progresses, for now it’s simply more of a logo.

Alongside your recent productions you’ve also been remixing your own tracks - mainly with a drum and bass focus. Is this something stylistically you’d like to move towards, or are you happy with the little club mix easter eggs that accompany the releases?

I definitely feel a pull stylistically to that sort of drum and bass sound as I have a strong passion for electronic music, I really want to blend Rnb/HipHop with DnB and dance music so the remixes are a sick way to start sharing that connection . The sound I’ve been developing will hopefully solidify that blend of styles.

You’ve been steadily releasing singles for a while now - can we expect an EP or album around the corner.

YES. Announcements soon on bigger a project which I’ve been putting together, in the meantime I’ll be focusing on releasing a few more singles, shoutout everyone who's tapped in so far!

Thank you for reading this article. Before you leave the page, we’d like you to take a moment to read this statement.  We are asking our readers to take action and stand with the BIPOC community who fight and endure the oppression and injustice of racial inequality.

Here in ‘Australia’,  Indigenous people are the most incarcerated population on Earth. Countless lives have been murdered by white police, white government policies and this country’s white history, institutionalised colonialism and ongoing racial oppression. Racial injustice continues today under the phoney, self-congratulatory politics of ‘Reconciliation’ and the notion that colonialism is something that must be denied and forgotten, an uncomfortable artefact of the past.

Feeling guilty is not enough. We must take action, pay the rent, educate ourselves and acknowledge that empathy and sorrow for past actions is insufficient if this does nothing to prevent our current reality from extending into the future.

Please consider making donations to the following organisations (the list is so small and the work to be done is so large, do your research to find more grassroots, Indigenous-lead community organisations):
