'Stay' / Brambles [Premiere]

Brambles follows up latest single with off-kilter, experimental pop-track ‘Stay’

Brambles’ latest single “Stay” announces a genre shift for the previously ambient electronica artist - this time playing with frantic vocal chops, otherworldly tuning and glitch programming. It’s the second taste of their forthcoming album Mirror due in November, and features a hypnotising animation by 3D artist Chris Domeny.

Brambles says on the single:

With Stay I wanted to create a song inspired by the process of an emotional breakthrough, this led to contrasting sections of chaos and realisation. Everything is forever shifting and for me this song was pivotal in exploring a new sound palette.

With a career spanning nearly a decade and incredible debut album Charcoal up their sleeves, Brambles’ journey has moved organically with them - changing and progressing as they themselves did. During these years of training and experimentation the multi-instrumentalist moved from traditional instruments, to a PlayStation DAW before delving deep and passionately into the world of software synths. The result is a cultivated understanding and intuition of the tools, which has led to their most exciting project to date in Mirror; a true marker of their experimental and boundary-pushing style.

Brambles says on the album:

The album explores the different personalities and experiences of a travelling entity, mashing and blurring many different genres together. My aim was to create a highly textured collection of tracks ranging from soft to super crunchy and everything in between. Thank you for reading this article. Before you leave the page, we’d like you to take a moment to read this statement.  We are asking our readers to take action and stand with the BIPOC community who fight and endure the oppression and injustice of racial inequality.

Here in ‘Australia’,  Indigenous people are the most incarcerated population on Earth. Countless lives have been murdered by white police, white government policies and this country’s white history, institutionalised colonialism and ongoing racial oppression. Racial injustice continues today under the phoney, self-congratulatory politics of ‘Reconciliation’ and the notion that colonialism is something that must be denied and forgotten, an uncomfortable artefact of the past.

Feeling guilty is not enough. We must take action, pay the rent, educate ourselves and acknowledge that empathy and sorrow for past actions is insufficient if this does nothing to prevent our current reality from extending into the future.

Please consider making donations to the following organisations (the list is so small and the work to be done is so large, do your research to find more grassroots, Indigenous-lead community organisations):
