'Play by Play EP' / JASA
Play by Play is the first EP release by electronic music producer JASA (aka Jaime Sacchero). Scattered with melancholic saxophone melodies, dissonant synths and left-field techno percussive beats, Play by Play toys with space, texture and movement as an exercise in loosening the shackles of music production. In doing so, the EP thematically becomes an extraterrestrial voyage where the accruement of ambient noise, incidental artefacts and breaks convey a barren post-punk dystopia.
Despite being composed of 5 tracks: Better, 16-8-18, Tube, Aleatoric Form and FL4TPK; Play by Play comes in stylistic pairings. The prologue track Better offers a preliminary character of the EP with shrill synth patterns and syncopated other-worldly noises. Contrastingly, 16-8-18 is an intimate piece with a soft saxophone and keyboard union in the foreground evoking feelings of longing and nostalgia. Underpinning 16-8-18 is a melancholic atmosphere accentuated with the fragmented, scarce percussive elements.
Tube and Aleatoric Form have a similar antithetical relationship. While Tube begins with the persistent low thump of a kick drum before acquiring a brooding disposition, Aleatoric Form floats in some space devoid of character and time with its bouncing, vivacious melodies. Where Tube is akin to the hypnotic dub-beats pervading Tapan’s Bogovi, Aleatoric Form more closely resembles the ambient sounds of Max Cooper’s Empty Set. The final track FL4TPK is the lone dance-driven track with more persistent beats yet still deserves its place of belonging within the EP as does your friend at Sub Club every Weekend (admirable).
Aleatory, as expressed in the title of the fourth track, envelopes the life-cycles of creative processes that gave birth to Play by Play. Signifying some chance or random occurrence, aleatory is present within the series of disorganised fragments with ill-defined structures that weasel themselves into such a form of organised chaos that is both interesting and emotionally compelling.
