'Identity and Understanding' / Corry Harper
Artist statement: The inspiration behind my work is driven behind the idea of identity and understanding ones inner/true self in relation to those around us. Most of these works in some way are a self portrait, expressing personal thoughts through faces or text. Coming from a mixed race background (my mother is Ethiopian, and my father is Scottish) I am constantly surrounded by the African features of my mothers side of the family, I find myself more comfortable and familiar with my African culture, physical features and gestures. Maybe this is why big lips and wide noses are often displayed through my work; maybe I create this depiction in an attempt to understand the two races within myself, maybe it’s to prove to the outside world that despite my appearance I am still apart of the black community? I am yet to figure that out myself. Each painting portrays my growth as a person of colour and highlights my thought process through my development. Most of these works are acrylic paints on canvas paper.
