'Moroccan Mix' / Masha
“Visiting Morocco as a French person always evoked feelings of familiarity and discomfort stemming from the undeniable colonial influence of French culture in Morocco. While some of the music in this mix conforms to popular western musical trends of the 1980s, I wanted to juxtapose this with some of the electronic and reactionary music of Morocco and its close neighbours.
In these tracks we can hear 3/3 Touareg beats as well as modern chants of rebellion. While none of these records were purchased during my trip in Morocco - as the last record shop shut down down two years ago when its owner died - I was incredibly inspired by the blissful mix of traditional and contemporary Moroccan music, as well as the brave and hardworking people making creative endeavours like Atlas Electronic Festival happen. The emotional richness of the Moroccan music reminds us that there is so much to discover about the rhythms of Africa…”
